Lecture 1 : Introduction to the module
Week 1 | 28th August 2019
Upon entering the class, we were introduced to 2 lecturers, Dr Noorhayati and Dr Yip Jinchi. They gave the class a brief explanation on the expectations and requirements of the module. On a side note, it was mentioned that research done in this class can be carried forward into Design Research Dissertation.
Tips:
There is 1 BIG Assignment, consisting of:
Week 01 - 04: Research Proposal
What do you want to solve? What is your research? How are you going to rationale?
Week 04 - 07: Research - Critical Review
Read and critique other research. Why is it good? Why is it structured the way it is? Between 7-10 articles to scrutinize
Week 07 - 11: Research Implementation - Primary Data
First hand information with observation, experimentation, visual analysis. To carry and collect data. Look at them, make sense and analyse the findings.
Week 07 -14: Research Report and Presentation
Brush and polish your findings. Prepare for presentation.
Surf the net and read published articles (e.g. from AIGA, It's Nice That) to gain inspiration and ideas that would lead to our individual research topics or areas. A general approach is acceptable for the first week. It has to be in the vicinity of our chosen specialization.
Directed Research Themes:
1) Design Future Making
2) Social Design
3) Design & Culture
These themes are to be carried into our specialization. Conduct initial research first and prepare for critical feed backs. Our research should be based solely on published journals or articles (Google Scholar as search engine). That is a 'no' to websites, only scholarly written.
All classwork to be submitted through Google Classroom. Respective submissions are due Week 4, 8, 11 and 14. Presentation on Week 14 is to share your individual research journey with the class.
Upon picking the topic of research, answer:
1) Identify the research problem
2) Write problem statement (spells out clearly on the issue, 3 paragraphs)
3) Identify research objectives
4) Formulate research question (comes from your research problem. To find out more about why it happens and to understand the topic further)
Tips:
- Locate articles to determine your theme and where does your specialization play
- Read the abstract or keywords first to check relevance
- Chose more recent and relevant articles
- Site references to solidify your case
- Be practical with your research. Will it cost a lot to carry it out? Is it viable (to complete in 14 weeks)?
- It can be something conceptual, it is a discussion of ideas
" Have hunger for content and provide differentiation. Building content is key to associate yourself with thinking and creative capabilities."
- Dr Noorhayati & Dr Yip Jinchi

Lecture 2 : Problem Statement
Week 2 | 06th September 2019
Lecture 3 : Research 101
Week 3 | 13th September 2019
Lecture 4 : No Lecture
Week 4 | 20th September 2019
Cancellation of classes due to worsening air quality.Proposal
Week 1 : Research Topic
28th August 2019
Specialization: Graphic DesignChosen Research Theme: Social Design
Approved Research Topic: Emotional resonance between graphic design and people
Note below are the initial topics that were rejected due to their nature of being either social science related. Some topics were considered new theories that need to be tired and tested. Therefore, the research itself will take longer than 14 weeks, which is not practical.

Week 2 : Research Proposal
06th September 2019
Feedback:
Graphic Design has multiple genres and mediums to it and should be narrowed down. Dr. Yip Jinchi advised me to do a throughout research on emotions and its importance towards graphic design. Along with finding out if there is an emotional link between graphic design and people.
Week 3 : Research Proposal
13th September 2019
Feedback:
Dr Jin chi advised to further refine my research topic. The topic refined to: Emotions expressed through Mid-Century Modern Graphic Design and it’s influence on modern day visual identity.
Dr Jin Chi's first question to me was 'Which movement specifically?' Are we talking about everything from the 1920's to 1960's collectively or one particular movement? I must be specific to what I am researching about. What are the social implications for this?
She also mentioned Why does the movement come about besides emotion? Which made me question the objectives of my research, am I trying to research purely emotions or the concept of the movements? To study the concepts that apply in the modern age, our age of technology. Therefore, she helped me rephrase my research: Select comtemporary(today) modern designs (user interface) that match the concepts and purpose of 20th century modern art and design. Also, she briefed on the need to use the APA referencing style. Note to self: Need to seriously brush up my art history knowledge.
Week 4 : Submission of Proposal
20th September 2019
Feedback after submission:
• Research Theme: Should be Design Culture• Research Topic, Research Problem: Related to each other, Relevant to the research theme (if it’s Design Culture)• Problem Statement: First paragraph – connect the second sentence to the third one. They are disconnected presently. Second paragraph – cite some design examples to give clarity to your second sentence. You problem in the second paragraph is not apparent because the third sentence is confusing – on one hand you’re saying that current interface design needs innovation but you’re also saying that the past (20th century) is where the best practices were. So what is it that you’re saying? At the end of the last paragraph, indicate what interface designs you are planning to study. Overall, your problem statement needs to reflect the research problem. Currently, that’s not the case.• Citations: Must be in APA style. • Research Objectives, Research Questions: Sound but again, make sure your problem statement articulates that clearly.• References: Relevant but need to be in APA style.
We're allowed to make corrections BEFORE Week 13.
Reflection
Experiences
It still takes some getting used to having 2 lecturers in the same class. However, it is a good thing especially if you have a class of more than 20 students. The amount of reading required for the subject is something I am looking forward to.
On Week 4, the Vice Chancellor has announced that physical classes will be canceled due to the haze situation. We submitted our proposal 20 Sept (before 2pm) as evidence to your presence in "class" for that day.

Observations
Everyone has their own curiosity streak and a topics of interest. It's nice to see everyone freely being able to pick a topic of their own passionate choosing.
Findings
Finding a research topic for myself was not an easy task. It took a few tries till I managed to find the right angle and the right balance between social design and social science.
Note to self: Need to seriously brush up my art history knowledge.
