Lecture 7 : Type in Different Mediums
Week 7 | 07th October 2019
Static
It can be stationary, calligraphic, ideograph
Examples: Print (ink based) and Screen (square pixels)
Kinetic (ex: TV, web)
It captures attention and eye catching. Moving type to tell stories and evoke emotions.
Types: Motion (cannot transform) and Fluid (can transform)
Examples: Morphing (Geometric and complex types), Accelerated animation, creative animated letters in a static world, storytelling
Environmental
Employs architectural aspects including shape, texture, color
3D Type (tools: Maya, Cinema 4D)
Creates extra depth
Example: Minimal 3D, Life-like effects
AR (actual situations)
Re examine relations to space and ourselves. Interactive rather than immersive.
VR (artificial situations)
Immersive in nature

The Troublemakers Manifesto : A Design Colloquium
Week 5 | 23rd September 2019
We start be creating a Key Visual that will extend into other collateral or promotional materials such as T shirts, key chains, tote bags, etc. The key visual is something that you conceive. Project 1 and Project 2 are linked.
Troublemakers here are defined as:
- Politically inclined whereby they cause people of power to feel uncomfortable
- Creating societal difference by carrying out projects to provide positive change
- People who are innovative and are disrupting the status quo in a sense and bringing change to society
Explore image and type interplay. Use visual elements developed with the topic that are similar to the strength of the type play. Need not use the 9 initial exercise fonts.
Idea vs Concept
I started off by doing up multiple sketches on how to visually represent 'Troublemakers' in the design industry. How are we perceived in public or even how we perceive the public. Below are thought sketches
On week 6, I finally did up my digital execution. The idea of troublemakers in terms of experimental, disembodiment of design. To look underneath at the work that goes into generating design. To know ourselves as designers, we're busy 'bees' (the letter 'B' being replaced by an actual Bee), have an 'eye' for vision and our 'hands' that do all the manual work. We're consistently changing, growing in society. Also, using paper effects like torn pages and 'manifesto' hidden within amongst words.

Idea vs Concept
Often, these terms are used by students and lecturers interchangeably and incorrectly. I would like to clarify its use in this post, in so that moving forward, all of you would be more cognisant when using it.
The following explanation is in the context of our (creative people) use:
An idea is singular in nature. You can have many ideas, but, for them to be considered as ideas, each one must be unique. Hence their singular nature.
A concept is plural. There can be many concepts: of the same type or different. They are generally derived from a singular thought. This thought is represented in the form of an idea.
Meaning: Concepts are derived from a single idea. So every idea you have should ideally lead to a slew of concepts (Idea first, and then concepts based on that idea follows). Each individual idea (tree) produces its own concepts (branches). The better the idea, the more the concepts. I often say say, “a good idea, has legs”.
So henceforth, when you use the terms idea/concept, be cognisant of their meaning before using it in your description or explanation.

Basically, we should develop as many ideas as we can, exhaust yourself. Then pick the promising ones and develop concepts from there. Trial and error is necessary sometimes. Identify the ideas and develp a rough digital execution by the next class.

Week 6 | 07th October 2019
Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul commented on the visual saying it looks alright. Maybe too many colours but I've used only primary colors and to invoke the scheme of Bauhaus, the school that housed Europe's most experimental creatives. Also, I added the Morpheus pill is a popular cultural meme, a metaphor representing a choice between the "red pill", representing a life of truth and knowledge, harsh freedom, and the brutal truth of reality, and the "blue pill", representing a life of luxury and security, tranquil and happy, and mostly ignorance of the harsh realities of life, basking in a dishonest illusion.

Feedback
Week 6
General Feedback:Getting a good idea is by exhausting yourself by coming up with multiple ideas. Idea generation can be done in many ways/methods. Some examples are: mind maps, conversations or synonyms. Conversations especially help with going back and forth with various ideas or possibilities. Though it's important to do it with someone who you have good synergy/chemistry with, people who trigger your bulb. On a side note, try not to use a black background or light bulbs. There's a common thing in design: you need head, heart and hand.
Individual Feedback:The idea of troublemakers in terms of dismemberment, disembodiment of design. To look underneath at the work that goes into generating design. To know ourselves as designers, we're busy 'bees', an 'eye' for vision and our hands that do all the manual work. We're consistantly changing, growing in society. Idea is accepted and well communicated. However, I just need to remove the background and pull everything closer together. Try looking at it as a logo instead of a poster.

Week 7
General Feedback
If you have any suggestions, give it to the class representative to voice it out. If you don't use tact, you're ideas won't be heard.
Type system: Have outline around the artwork and in spreads. Not in individual pages. The PDF must be final, visible/public. When you do the Finding Type exercise, every refined process must be placed on a baseline. Show first refinement and last refinement. Lectures must be uploaded and summarized. Complete all works.
Project 2: When you take the KV that was developed, the details have to enhance it. A2 size poster. 4 applications. Not directly applied, there must be slight variation. When put together, the identity would look complete, rich and together. Too much variation would cause disconnect.
Individual FeedbackComposition is ok. Perhaps change the hands to wooden ones to relate it back to art. Colors might be a bit too much for Mr Vinod but its fine. Continue with Project 2 with the completion of the poster, microsite (both are compulsory) and few others like T shirt, Tote bag, keychain, pins, badges, stationeries etc. If you're designing pins and badges, have a packaging for them as well. Note to self: Consider banners, buntings, wraps.

Reflection
Experiences
Week 6
I had difficulties choosing an idea to follow through with. I tried them digitally but they did not come out the way i imagined them to be. It was a tough process but finally i decided to merge a few ideas to come up with a better one compared to as they were individually. Thus, coming up with the thought to take pictures of my own hands rather than waste time finding ones online and forcing myself to use them. We talked about idea generation in class, that was a refreshing take on how we can come up with more design ideas.
Week 7
We talked about Environmental Medium in class and I wondered how is it different or similar to Environmental Composition. A classmate was kind enough to explain it to me.
Observations
Week 6
Everyone seemed to have the same perception of 'Troublemakers' using skulls or bones, animals such as crows, violent expressions such as breaking glass or smashing with fists.
Week 7
The class seemed interested in animated typography. Most of us were playing more attention than usual due to the nature of motion typography being eye catching and attracts viewers attention.
Findings
Week 6
We are able to generate more ideas by conversations. Especially with people who we have chemistry or synergy with, to trigger idea-ful conversations.
Week 7
Ava was late today for the first time. I need to get more reading in regarding Typography history and tutorials on how to create 3D type or motion type. It's always intrigued me on the creation of such beautiful graphics but I've never spent the time or effort in sitting myself down to actually learn it.
Further Reading
This book gave me insights on the origins of Bauhaus and its teachings. It talked about teaching methods of Bauhaus and its applications.
