Lectures

Lecture 8 : About Ideas
Week 8  |  14th October 2019

Within ideas there are categories, it is the level of potency of the idea that varies according to different fields. For example, in advertising, its about the witty-ness of your ideas. It needs to be pronounced and obvious. However, in Graphic Design, the idea is meshed together with the artwork and design. It is not so obvious but it makes sense - the idea is not in your face.

Lecture 9 : Final Project Brief
Week 9  |  21st October 2019

The final project is about Option 1: developing a font (creation of a typeface) to solve a larger problem that you have identified or meant to be part of a solution which refers to a typographical issue, could be inspired by the problem OR Option 2: Explorative in nature, existing typefaces you see that aren't currently fulfilling, it can come from anywhere from areas you can improve and experiment - take an existing solution and add value to it (innovation).

Week 12 is preparation for submission. We need to work hard and fast to identify what we want to do. The ideation process is important, refine and refine so that you may have something worthy.

Project 2

The Troublemakers Manifesto : A Design Colloquium
Week 8  |  14th October 2019

With our key artwork, we're meant to develop the collateral's that follow suit. Note that its always best to design on the artwork you're meant to because when you scale it, the proportion will change. I've decided on creating a tote bag, T shirt, event tags and pins as collateral along with the main poster and micro site.
Image: Key artwork for the event.

Image: I've created a simplified version of the key artwork to be used for collateral purposes
so that it would look neater and can be easily repeated.

Image: The first version of the poster developed with details of the event. However, needs to be re looked
as the details should be placed around the key artwork instead of stuck at a corner.

Image: Pin (small) designs which I used and combined elements within the key visual to create character-like figures. The eye and cheeky smile, the busy bee that's got something to say and the morpheus pill in a loop. Two options of white and black backgrounds.

Image: I've created event tags for the Guest, Speaker and Crew in two background styles (2 options): the top row in white and the bottom row in colors.

Image: First round of T shirt design with the Troublemakers key artwork but its too small to notice the details so needs to be redone.

Image: My second attempt at the poster. Unfortunately, it blends in with the key visual and it instead needs to stand out more.

Feedback

Week 8
General Feedback
In a Graphic Design Artwork, the idea is meshed with the design. It's not so obvious but makes sense. Note that within ideas there are categories and the level of potency of the idea varies from different fields.

Individual Feedback

Key artwork is fine. The simplification of the key artwork is also alright. However, for the poster, its better to use the current key artwork, strategically place it and curate the information around it instead of parking it at a corner and playing with an already perfect key artwork. For the collaterals, the pins are fine but I need to make the cardboard that it sits on and consider putting the Troublemakers logo at the back. The event tags are alright as well but maybe have a variation between the Guest, Speaker and Crew. Perhaps make the crew in red to show the difference. For the tshirt, increase the size of the artwork on it, the logo has details that if shrinked, you won't be able to see it.

Week 9
General Feedback

It's fine to do your visuals in Photoshop, but when it comes with placing type then it must be in Illustrator.

Individual Feedback
Let the key artwork sing. The information is currently shouting too much and the colours used are too strong. Make it simple, more of an extension but looks different. As for the collaterals, the shirt and tote bag are fine, remember to add the 'Manifesto: A Design Colloquium'. Pins are ok, get a plastic to put them together later on. Put a screenshot of the website in as well.

Reflection

Experiences

Week 8

I got feedback regarding my poster design and realized I misunderstood how it was suppose to be done. So quite upset with myself for missing the mark there but I guess that's the learning curve of things. Also got comments for my Blog, I always thought there wasn't any issues with it but guess I'm wrong again.

Week 9

We got briefed for our final project and I at awe to what has been done in the past and I am looking forward to creating something new and fresh (hopefully hasn't been done before). To be original is going to be a challenge.

Observations

Week 8

Everyone seems to be busy with their respective projects and such, especially the key art artwork and now adapting them to the other collaterals.

Week 9

I got feedback regarding my poster design but managed to fix it on the spot.

Findings

Week 8

We are entering the second half of the semester and we're suppose to start our Final Project today I realized however we're a little behind unfortunately.

Week 9

I am going to have to do alot ALOT of reading, researching and some sleeping to come up with a good idea.

Further Reading

I went through readings on Bauhaus designs. It had information on how the Bauhaus teachings have lead the notion of 'Troublemakers'.
