Lecture 8 : Data Collection Methods
Week 8 | 18th October 2019
Recap from Week 7:
Upon entering the class, Dr Hayati asked us to revisit our research question to reiterate in our heads 'Why do you want to do your chosen research'. What is your objectives and research questions. What are the most effective ways to conduct the objective of research.
Dr Hayati mentioned about Triangulation of Data which will be used in our Dissertation. Triangulation means using more than one method to collect data on the same topic. This is a way of assuring the validity of research through.
Identify between Qualitative and Quantitative research. What instruments are you planning to use to conduct the research. Minimum 2 instruments. Examples are visual analysis, individual or online interviews, face to face interviews, focus groups or chat forum groups. Consider who should be involved in your research.
To communicate with participants via Email interface:
There is a template to follow, which was shared on TiMeS, to ask if they're interest to participate in an interview and a gratitude email. It's an official way to approach a formal research or we may use our Taylor's email address.

Week 8
18th October 2019
We had to determine the methods of research that will be conducted. Below is my first draft:Feedback:
Ms Jinchi mentioned that I'm somewhat there but it needs to be further refined. Justify my choice for Visual Analysis. Define functionalism in the context of web interface design whether is it related to 20th century functionalist teachings of Bauhaus. Feature images/screenshots of the websites and provide clear background and justification of each. When examining through the lens of Form Follows Function, further elaborate why and relate back to Bauhaus teachings and research objectives. For the survey, How is it relevant to my research?
Surveys are usually 7-8 questions. "It's not about the 20th century functionalist teachings of Bauhaus knowledge. More of the functionality of interface design (21st c) which I had earlier mapped with 20th c concepts" Ms Jinchi mentioned specifically. She clarified many aspects of the research with me. For my research topic, consider face to face interview with people who are familiar with the teachings of Bauhaus to discover more in depth perspectives. Next week: Please prepare the questions that will be asked during face to face interview and the questions withing the survey.
Week 9
25th October 2019
I have decided to follow through with face to face interviews and visual analysis as my research methodologies.Feedback:
Critical Review (Assignment 2) Feedback: Relevance of research: Research is relevant but all the articles are dated: CR1 (2008), CR2 (2009), CR3 (2002), CR4 (2011), CR5 (2006), CR6 (2013) and CR7 (2011). I understand that some articles with philosophical theories could be timeless but you should also read contemporary research articles (should be from 5 years ago) as your research problem deals with appropriation of purpose and function of 20th century design principles in 21st century’s interface design. Clarity of examination: Rather substantial, overall. Summaries for all articles are concise and critiques are thorough and very articulated. All bibliographies should not be underlined. Research Implementation: Dr Jinchi was very helpful in tightening the components within my research implementation methods. The questions contructed are straigforward but was refined further by Dr Jinchi to ensure a more fruitful response from the interviewees'. Next step is to send out the first email to the participants of the face to face interview. It is important to schedule a time and place for the interview to take place next week. Only one website will be used for visual analysis to test the method of analyzing. The other two websites can be analyzed later in the Dissertation module.

Research Implementation Feedback:
Regarding my analysis for the face to face interview: How are the answers applicable to the research. What are the implications. What Is the surface meaning and what is the hidden meaning, both needs to be related to the topic discussed. Compare 2 interviewees’ answers, question to question. Find the possible themes or patterns that emerge from there. Regarding Visual Analysis: Name the stages. Within the thrid stage, each function is further elaborated here in relation to 20th century functionalism concept and purpose. With citations. Overall, very thorough. Describe in an organized manner. Segments are clearly divided. Images included guide the reader to have a better understanding of the visual analysis.
