Lecture 5 : Image and Imagery in Packaging Design
Week 5 | 26th September 2019
Today we talked about Image and Imagery in Packaging Design. Check out the presentation done by my classmates. Have a look:
We talked about the brands DHerbs and Qu Putih. Both brands have packaging that are outdated or suggestive. They require major re branding if they are to market internationally or to be successful in the local market.
Lecture 6 : Brand and Packaging
Nightlights by Lorena Alvarez.
I have decided to create a mini lantern as the merchandise that comes with the book. The paper bag will act as a sneak peek as to what's within.
I've tested out the laser cut of my lantern. It did not go well because the design was too detailed and the paper is not thick enough to withstand the blowing of the cutter. In the second round (below) Mr Shamsul and I tried with a board at the bottom to keep it from flying off. It helped a little but the design needs to be revised.
Week 8
Mr Shamsul was kind enough to extend the deadline for us. So I managed to simplify the design and perform the laser cut successfully. Glad for that. I've also used the laser cut to cut the paper bag and the word 'Nightlights' on mounting board to perform embossing on the paperbag. I've also managed to print the book sleeve on my chosen paper of 380gsm.

Project 1 Update: To show sketches of book sleeve and paper bag + a third item
Lecture 6 : Brand and Packaging
Week 6 | 03rd October 2019
Today we talked about Brand and Packaging. Brand develops the brand image and personality. Packaging helps build that image and identity further. We can build relationships between the consumer and the packaging itself. E.g. Coca Cola bottle, Perfume bottles, reusable bags or Biscuit tins to be reused as containers for other things.
We are to implement this to our Project 2 and Final project.

Lecture 7 : Merchandising and Visual Merchandising Design
Week 7 | 10th October 2019
Today I gave a presentation on the types of Merchandising and Element of visual design.
Project 1
Book Sleeve + Paper Bag + Mini Lantern
Week 5
We are to show our sketches for our book sleeve design and merchandise. So the book I've chosen to provide a sleeve for is a fully illustrated book,Nightlights by Lorena Alvarez.
Week 6
I've tested out the laser cut of my lantern. It did not go well because the design was too detailed and the paper is not thick enough to withstand the blowing of the cutter. In the second round (below) Mr Shamsul and I tried with a board at the bottom to keep it from flying off. It helped a little but the design needs to be revised.

Week 7
I've created the prototype to the book sleeve to test the functionality, form and shape of it.

Week 5
The materials for my book sleeve can be at 300 gsm since it's rather light although large in size. As well as the lantern, it may be an art card or a material of equal gsm. It'll be interesting to see the outcome of the project. Ensure to show a prototype by next week to know how the die cut will be executed. I may use the elements that are part of the illustrated book.
Week 6
The testing with the laser cut machine did not go well. Mr Shamsul adviced to get a thicker paper and to simplify the design. We also tested the folding of the edges to join and make the lantern. The edges on the lantern side were too narrow so I need to increase it by reducing the frame area of the cut. Make the edges to stick the sides wider as well for the kids.Week 7
Be careful of the measurements of the sleeve. Ensure that the book can fit in nicely. Mr Shamsul mentioned 'good work on the design', he has no issues with it, just ensure the folding is neat and pasting is seamless. When doing the pasting, make sure to use glue to stick and not just double sided tape. As this would not be strong enough to hold it until collection day. It might come off.Reflection
Experiences
I am looking forward to creating my mini lantern. Hopefully, it turns out as cute as I imagined it to be, otherwise I'll be sad. I am talking more fluidly with my classmates and found out that I will be doing my Major Project with them at the final semester.
Observations
I feel more at ease as the days go by. It's a nice feeling.
Findings
I would like to experiment more with packaging and see to what extend I push myself.
